  • Opportunities for Energy Efficiency and Conservation in the Hotel Industry

  • Bishnu Tulsie
  • SLNT
2
Energy and Sustainable Development
  • Energy and the Bottom Line
  • Energy and the Environment
  • Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in Saint Lucia:  Results of a Survey in the Hotel Sector
  • Opportunities for the Future
3
Energy and the Bottom Line
4
National Energy Bill
(EC$ Millions)
5
Global Warming:  Saint Lucia’s Contribution in MT:  1994
6
Energy Audit Training Workshop
  • February 2004
  • Funded by CIDA Climate Change Development Fund
  • Conducted by Lewis Engineering & Marbek Resource Consultants Inc.
  • Initiative of the MPDEH to implement the Sustainable Energy Plan
7
GHG Emissions Reduction the Hotel sector
  • GHG Sources:
    • Heating
    • Air conditioning and ventilation
    • Cooling
    • Hot water production
    • Lighting
    • Cooking
    • Other electrical consumption

8
What exists
9
House Keeping
  • Improve data collection and analysis
  • Use results to determine most cost effective conservation measures and implement
  • Monitor and analyse results
10
Options for improvements
  • Energy Records will:
    • Track energy use over time
    • Help identify “hot spots”
    • Support management and investment decisions

11
Water Measures
  • Identify and stop leaks
  • Install water conservation measures
  • Investigate and implement recycling options
  • Use pumps only when mains pressure is low
  • Place pool pumps on timers

12
Natural Ventilation
  • This is a mainly a design characteristic and to be considered at that phase.
  • Use of fans can mitigate certain levels of design flaws
13
Air conditioning
  • Purchase equipment with higher EER
  • Appropriate sizing of units
  • Use of central cooling using chiller systems
  • Preventative maintenance
  • Placement of condenser units
14
Lighting
  • Lighting levels
  • Use of fluorescent and CFLs
  • Use of timers and motion detectors
  • Solar options for lawns, walkways and security lighting
15
Room controls
  • Use of motion detectors
  • Use of room key cards to energize room circuits
  • Use of circulatory to minimise air conditioning requirements
16
Hot water
  • Replace electric water heaters with solar hot water systems

17
Insulation
  • Use of vegetation to provide shading
  • Provide natural ventilation for attic spaces
  • Incorporate thermal insulation in external walls and roofs

18
Impact of Study
  • Two target hotels incorporated some measures
  • Records not kept to determine impact
  • Initial cost to implement measures considered prohibitive
19
Way Forward
  • Institutionalize energy audits
  • Promote ESCOs
  • Create revolving fund to support conservation measures
  • Set efficiency standards for appliances
  • Provide further incentives to invest in efficiency and conservation.
  • Promote cogeneration under specific conditions
