One-day Symposium on Climate Change and Food Production

Rationale: There is growing general awareness of Climate Change at the global, regional and national levels. Nonetheless, there is probably less awareness of the specific impacts of Climate Change on specific sectors. The IPCC Third Assessment Report indicates that the agricultural and fisheries sectors are likely to be affected to a significant degree, although effects will be far from uniform around the world. The Caribbean, including Saint Lucia, may be more vulnerable than some other regions in this regard.

Saint Lucia’s ability to respond successfully to these challenges will require, inter alia, an understanding on the part of stakeholders, of how they will be affected by climate change and the adaptive open to them. It is important that the process of sensitization and education be started at this time as, according to some experts, the effects of climate change are already manifesting themselves.

Process: As a result a 1-day national symposium was held to examine the linkage between climate change and food production. This brought together stakeholder representatives from the public and private sectors and was aimed at sensitizing participants as well as identifying possible response measures.

Objective: The Objective of the Symposium was to sensitize stakeholders in the Agriculture Sector about the potential impacts of climate change and to begin to identify possible response measures.
